Low Calorie Party Meatballs

The classic grape-jelly meatball appetizer is a party legend - and a calorie bomb hiding in plain sight. This version uses lean ground turkey instead of frozen beef-pork meatballs, and a smaller amount of reduced-sugar jelly and BBQ sauce for the signature sweet-tangy glaze. You still get the sticky, saucy, fork-and-toothpick appeal, but each meatball is just 80 calories with 7 grams of protein. Perfect for game day, potlucks, or a holiday buffet.

Ingredients

  • 20 oz lean ground turkey (93/7)
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 cup lower-sugar BBQ sauce
  • 1/4 cup reduced-sugar grape jelly
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Mix the ground turkey, panko, egg, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a large bowl just until combined - don’t overmix or the meatballs get tough.

  3. Roll into 1-inch meatballs (about 32 total) and arrange on the baking sheet with space between them.

  4. Bake for 15-18 minutes, until cooked through and lightly browned.

  5. Simmer the BBQ sauce, grape jelly, and vinegar in a large skillet over medium heat until smooth and bubbly, about 3 minutes.

  6. Toss the baked meatballs in the sauce to coat. Serve warm with toothpicks, or keep warm in a slow cooker on low.
