Homemade Cranberry Sauce
Cranberry sauce is the easiest Thanksgiving upgrade you can make, and the homemade version tastes nothing like the canned log. Fresh cranberries simmer with orange zest, a cinnamon stick, and just enough maple syrup to tame the tartness - about a quarter of the sugar of traditional recipes. At 60 calories per serving it adds bright flavor to the plate without weighing it down.
Ingredients
- 12 oz fresh or frozen cranberries
- 1 orange (zest plus 1/4 cup juice)
- 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 pinch salt
Instructions
- Rinse the cranberries and discard any soft or bruised ones.
- Combine cranberries, orange juice and zest, maple syrup, water, cinnamon stick, and salt in a medium saucepan.
- Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to a simmer.
- Cook 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries burst and the sauce thickens.
- Remove from heat and discard the cinnamon stick.
- Let cool - the sauce will continue to thicken as it chills.
- Refrigerate at least 2 hours before serving. Serve cold or at room temperature.
