Baked Gulab Jamun

A baked, lighter version of the classic syrup-soaked dumpling. A dough of cottage cheese and whole wheat flour is shaped into balls, baked instead of fried, then soaked in a fragrant cardamom-rose honey syrup. Two pieces for just 200 calories.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup low-fat cottage cheese, drained
  • 1/4 cup low-fat milk
  • 3 tbsp honey (for syrup)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 tsp rose water (optional)
  • 1/4 cup water (for syrup)

Instructions

  1. Blend the cottage cheese until smooth, then mix with flour, baking powder, and 1 tsp olive oil.
  2. Add milk a little at a time and knead into a soft, smooth dough.
  3. Shape into 6 small smooth balls, ensuring no cracks.
  4. Place on a lined baking sheet and bake at 350F (175C) for 15-18 minutes until golden.
  5. Meanwhile, combine water, honey, cardamom, and lemon juice in a saucepan.
  6. Simmer the syrup 5-7 minutes until slightly thickened, then stir in rose water off the heat.
  7. Add the warm baked balls to the hot syrup and let them soak 15-20 minutes, turning once.
  8. Serve warm or at room temperature, 2 pieces per serving.
