Ideal Weight Calculator
Find the healthy target weight for your height. This free ideal weight calculator runs four trusted formulas - Devine, Robinson, Hamwi, and Miller - and gives you a realistic range instead of a single number, plus how far you are from it right now.
"How much should I weigh?" is one of the most common health questions, and the honest answer is a range rather than a single figure. Your healthy weight depends on height, gender, frame size, and how much muscle you carry, so any one formula will only be an estimate. By running four well-established formulas and showing them together, this calculator gives you a band that is far more useful for setting a realistic goal.
Enter your height and gender, optionally add your current weight, and you will see the ideal range from each formula plus how far you are from the middle of it. Use it as a starting point for goal-setting, then check it against your BMI and body fat percentage for the full picture.

How it works
1
Enter height & gender
Add your gender and height in metric or imperial units - the conversion is automatic.
2
We run four formulas
Devine, Robinson, Hamwi, and Miller each estimate your ideal weight from a base plus inches over 5 ft.
3
Compare to your weight
Optionally add your current weight to see how far you are from the middle of the range.
How it's calculated
Each formula starts from a base weight at 5 feet (60 inches) tall and adds a fixed number of kilograms for every inch above that. Devine (the most widely used, originally for drug dosing): men 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft; women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch. Robinson: men 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch; women 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch. Hamwi: men 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch; women 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch. Miller: men 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch; women 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch.
The calculator converts your height to inches, applies all four equations, and presents the spread as a range. Showing the range is more honest than any single number, because the formulas were derived from different populations and make different assumptions about body frame - Devine and Hamwi give higher per-inch additions and tend to produce slightly higher ideals, while Miller and Robinson are more conservative. The midpoint of the four is a useful single target, and the full span shows the realistic healthy band for your height.
Understanding your result
The range returned is a target band, not a pass-or-fail verdict. A practical definition of "healthy weight" is the weight that keeps your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9, and the four formulas almost always land inside or just beside that window for your height - so use the two together. If you lift weights or carry more muscle, sitting a little above the range is normal and not unhealthy, since muscle is denser than fat.
If your current weight is well above the range, aim for the upper end first through a modest calorie deficit, adequate protein, and resistance training to preserve muscle. If you are below the range, focus on building strength and lean mass rather than simply adding calories. Recheck as your height is fixed, but revisit your body fat percentage periodically to track real changes in composition.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is my ideal weight?
Your ideal weight depends on your height and gender. This calculator runs four established formulas - Devine, Robinson, Hamwi, and Miller - and gives you a range rather than a single number, since healthy weight varies by frame size and muscle mass.
Which ideal weight formula is best?
The Devine formula is the most widely used and was originally developed for medication dosing. Robinson, Hamwi, and Miller each refine it differently. Showing all four as a range is more honest than trusting any single formula, since each makes different assumptions about body frame.
How is ideal weight calculated?
Each formula starts from a base weight at 5 feet tall (e.g. 50 kg for men, 45.5 kg for women in Devine) and adds a fixed amount per inch of height above 5 feet. We convert your height to inches, apply each formula, and average the results.
Does muscle affect ideal weight?
Yes. These formulas were built for average body frames and do not account for muscle mass, so a heavily muscled person can sit above the range and still be lean and healthy. Muscle is denser than fat, so someone with more lean mass will weigh more at the same body fat percentage. Treat the range as a guide, not a ceiling.
What is a healthy weight range?
A practical definition is the weight that keeps your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9, which you can cross-check with our BMI calculator. The four ideal-weight formulas usually land inside or near that band, so using the formula range together with a healthy BMI window gives the most useful target for your height.
Is ideal weight different for men and women?
Yes. Each formula uses a lower base weight and a smaller per-inch increment for women, reflecting differences in average frame and muscle mass. For example, Devine uses 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft for men and 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch for women, so a woman of the same height will get a lower ideal weight.
What if my current weight is outside the range?
If you are only a few kilograms outside the range and feel strong and energetic, it may simply reflect your build or muscle mass - especially if you train. If you are well above the range, a modest calorie deficit with adequate protein and resistance training is the safest way to move toward it, rather than aggressive dieting.
Is this ideal weight calculator free?
Yes - completely free with no sign-up. Your inputs are saved in your browser and encoded in the URL so you can bookmark or share your result. Nothing is sent to a server.
